The tonsils and adenoids are clusters of lymphoid tissue and function as part of the immune system. They help by filtering or trapping organisms that enter our bodies through our nose and mouth. However, when they become infected they can become more of a problem than an asset, and effective medical treatment will be necessary. McKinney ENT has a great deal of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of tonsil and adenoid issues.
When to Call a Doctor for Tonsil and Adenoid Problems
There are several common problems that can affect the tonsils and adenoids.
Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can be obstructing and lead to chronic mouth breathing and snoring. In severe cases, this can cause obstructive sleep apnea in children, which has been associated with delayed development, poor school performance and even behavioral issues.
Infections can trigger symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, rash, headache, fever, bad breath (halitosis) and even ear pain.
If you experience any of these symptoms, visit McKinney ENT Clinic so we can perform a thorough examination. Sometimes tests including cultures, x-rays or blood tests may be helpful.
Treatment for Problems Affecting the Tonsils and Adenoids
In most instances, we will start with antibiotics for infections. Allergy medications may help with chronic nasal congestion and mouth breathing. If symptoms persist, it may be necessary to surgically remove the tonsils and/or adenoids. Dr. Socorro Chamblee of McKinney ENT Clinic is an expert at performing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. She prefers to use the coblator, which some studies have shown to be less painful with possibly quicker recovery times.
